Blind Woman's Curse's mix of sword opera, Yakuza gangster movie, horror and surrealism is an unbalanced and occasionally frustrating concoction. If the story wasn't out-there enough, Kaji's disappointingly limited screen-time means that there is little holding everything together. The supernatural elements occur so sporadically that they seem.

The cat would have been an easy go-to, but allow us to offer our own take on the cat's purpose in the film. The cat appears as soon as Aiko is wounded and laps at her blood. The cat then immediately attacks Akemi. To our mind, the cat represents the desire for revenge (blood thirsty revenge) which sets upon Aiko.

There is still something very compelling about "Blind Woman's Curse." Lots of weird, atmospheric moments, haunting images, and splatter. This is a film I will be revisiting with the commentary track. The final confrontation between Meiko Kaji's yakuza boss, and the titular Blind Woman is great cinema, particularly with that exchange.
